Onidon, a new restaurant concept from the Royal Holdings group, has opened in Tokyo, offering a unique twist on traditional Japanese cuisine. The restaurant serves a fusion of tempura rice balls, known as 'onigiri', with a focus on showcasing the tempura component prominently. This approach sets it apart from the typical 'tenmusu' (tempura rice balls) found in other parts of Japan.
The concept of Onidon was born from a staff meal at Tenya, a popular chain known for its affordable and tasty 'tendon' (tempura rice bowls). The idea of transforming a tempura rice bowl into an onigiri was developed into a new fast-food brand with global ambitions. However, the initial plan to create a chicken burger chain was eventually abandoned, and the focus shifted to the unique onigiri concept.
Onidon's menu features 10 different onigiri varieties, including deluxe versions, with prices starting from 310 yen. The restaurant's signature dish, the Onidon Special, comes with a variety of tempura on top of the rice ball, and it has already gained a positive response from customers. The shrimp version, in particular, was described as 'moreishly delicious' by our reporter, P.K. Sanjun.
What makes Onidon truly special is its emphasis on the tempura component. Unlike traditional tenmusu, where the tempura is usually hidden beneath the rice, Onidon's onigiri proudly displays the tempura, creating a visually striking and flavorful experience. The rice and tempura are combined with seaweed, creating a unique and satisfying bite with every mouthful.
Onidon's menu also includes a variety of side dishes, such as tonjiru (pork miso soup) and fried chicken, making it a versatile dining option. The restaurant's location in the Ecute building at Ochanomizu Station adds to its appeal, as it is easily accessible and provides a unique dining experience.
The success of Onidon is already evident, with its menu and concept attracting attention and generating positive feedback. The restaurant's focus on showcasing the tempura component and its unique fusion approach could potentially make it as well-known as the Tenya chain. This success highlights the creativity and innovation that can come from within the food industry, as staff members at these chains often contribute to menu development and create 'makanai' (hidden) meals that delight customers.
